Nietzsche asked: 'What reception did the Berlin press give to The Birth of Tragedy?' The question embarrassed me a little, for the Berlin reviews were negative; moreover, when Nietzsche left Basel, the false report of his death had circulated in Berlin, and Gustav Engel had made the gentle obituary: 'He died of Wagner.'
